Fish and seafood contributes significantly to the nutrition of Thai people. More than 2.5 million tons are caught per year, from the sea as well as in lakes, rivers and rice fields. Most of the catch is eaten by local people.

Thailand's main exports are mainly frozen crustaceans like prawns, most of which goes to Japan and the U.S. In and around Bangkok there are about 60 fish processing factories, especially manufacturing tinned tuna. In order to maintain their capacity, a large amount of tuna has to be imported as well.
