Sports and Games Thai people are enthusiastic sportsmen and players. Even if they are not actively involved in the game, at least they will place a bet. By far, the most popular local sport is Thai boxing (muay thai), followed by the ball game takraw, kite flying competitions, boat races and the boules-like petong, in which Thailand has won the world championship title several times. Regarding international sports, football tops the popularity scale in Thailand well ahead of boxing, volleyball, tennis and golf.
Boat Races Boat races commonly take place in October at the end of the rainy season and often an inherent part of local festivals, which are celebrated at the end of the Buddhist fasting time. The colorfully decorated boats with forty or more rowers can reach impressive speeds.
