AD plus 543... Thailand's official chronology starts with the birth of Buddha in the year 543 BC. Our year 2011 AD is equivalent with the year 2554 B.E. (Buddhist Era). Similar to our Gregorian calendar, the Buddhist calendar starts on January 1 as well and is divided into 12 months. However, important traditional ceremonies follow the moon calendar. It begins with the Thai New Year celebration – Songkran – on April 13.
Clock Time Thailand is six hours ahead of Central Europe (CET), during the European summertime only five hours. At noon in Thailand it is only 6 am in the morning in Germany, France or Italy – or 7 am during summertime.
